Safe Haven

June 10 – July 25, 2021

Chico, CA – Safe Haven, monca’s next juried exhibition, features artists' sense and experience of a safe space; thoughts on addressing the complex social issues of homelessness; observations that may be tinted by compassion, confusion or personal involvement. This exploration of "home" is conveyed by what makes us feel secure, as well as encompassing the complex social issues of homelessness and feeling unsafe.

Safe Haven turned out to be an emotional topic which produced images of immigration, dislocation, a search for belonging, culture shock, detention centers, images of war and the validation that comes with a stamped passport.  These themes are so beautifully expressed in the works of Tali Grinshpan - Sanctuary, Pearl Kruss – Girl with Doll, and Pallavi Sharma – 3 in Line

The themes of homelessness and racial inequality are taken up by artists Nimisha Doongarwal through her layered collage portraits, Mike Depue and his photo of a woman on the branch of a dead tree, and Elvira Dayel and her figurative artworks such as the homeless man with coins flowing into his cup.

Susan Fuller captures memories and emotions through her unique colorful glass work, and Pennie Baxter directs the narrative that runs through our mind when looking at a photograph by layering and stacking images.

The show runs through Sunday, July 25, 2021.

The Art Splurge opens to the public on June 29, 2014 at 6 p.m. with refreshments and food, of course. Here’s the trick...the artwork will be hung anonymously and patrons won’t know whose work they’ll be picking. Value and name recognition is leveled in this sale while fun and suspense is increased. 30 first-pick tickets will be sold at $50 each prior to the Splurge on a first-come, first-serve basis. After the 30 first-pick ticket holders have chosen their pieces to buy, the artwork is available to all for just $150 ($100 for current HAC Members--another great reason to become a member today!).

Auction November 23, 2013

Center for Contemporary Art, Sacramento is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement and appreciation of new and experimental art by international, national and regional artists. We accomplish our goal of promoting the appreciation of contemporary art in the Greater Sacramento Region through exhibitions, lectures, Art Camp! and the ever increasingly popular Capital Artists' Studio Tour.

In order to support a full schedule of exhibitions, lectures, trips and other activities for next year, CCAS needs your support at the 2013 Benefit Art Auction. Our annual auction is our most important fund raising event and critical to our operation.

We are very pleased announce that work will be featured at the Elliott Fouts Gallery, one of the preeminent art venues in the Sacramento area, during November culminating in the auction the night of November 23. Additionally, David Sobon, who has become a standard at the Benefit Art Auction, will once again be our auctioneer.

We will be offering a “cash-and-carry” option during November's Second Saturday if a patron wants to purchase a silent auction work, they may purchase the work and take it home during the event.

Ruth Hall
I was taking photos of a pond in Paradise when all of the sudden I started hearing something that sounded kind of like squirrels scrambling up a tree. A crisper sound though. I turned around and saw Ruth vigorously attacking her canvas with a very large oil pastel. Her face is fairly calm but you can hardly follow her hands. Never have I seen an artist put that much energy into a painting. You may have seen some of her series of shoe paintings at the Paradise Library last month. You can see more of Ruth's art at ruthhallart.blogspot.com/

Ruth's Statement:
The last several years my work focus has been with oil paint and oil pastel. My inspiration for painting comes from travel, but it's more than travel. It's doing life a little different than usual, take a different path, stop at a different place, and look another way. I take digital photographs to help remind me of my emotional response to a place and time. I paint to capture a feeling of that place and time, not just a representation of a place.

I have always been drawn by the subject matter of plein air painting, originally the Canadian Group of Seven, and also the light and color of the Impressionists. For myself, once I'm outside there is so much to explore I prefer walking, not painting. So, most of the time, outside I have my camera and come home to paint.

Members of Chico Art Center put on a show

By LINDSAY ALLINGER-Correspondent

CHICO — If you have never been to the Chico Art Center, this month is the perfect opportunity to take a look at what many of Chico's great local artists have to offer all at once. The Chico Art Center is holding its annual Member's Exhibition for the year 2013 from Jan. 12 through Feb. 8.
Ben Saturen, professional artist/educator and one of the CAC's members, compares his experiences at the Chico Art Center's exhibitions with other venues from his extensive curriculum vitae, "I find that the quality of art displayed at most of Chico Art Center's shows in general, indicates a high level of skill and creativity and is equal to many art shows typically found in larger metropolitan competitions."
Saturen himself plans to include a piece in this particular show. He is dedicated to portraying his theme which appears to be the importance of nature; his works have been displayed at several museums of natural history as well as zoos, parks, and conservation centers.
Saturen's paintings and drawings show obvious skill of technique with his realistic interpretations. As a very refreshing change from many contemporary artists, his pieces show beauty and elegance, which everyone will have a chance to appreciate.
Leslie Mahon-Russo, a lifelong art-lover, also plans to include a piece in this year's show. Many of Mahon-Russo's pieces are large-scale, acrylic, abstract paintings, though she has also of late been drawing from the human figure. She appreciates the "freedom
and movement that [abstract painting] allows," but has also found life-drawing to be "compelling." As art-lovers know, art has always gone back and forth between the classical notion of realistic and figurative worth to that which challenges the classical ideas.
Mahon-Russo describes the importance of the Chico Art Center's shows, "I especially appreciate the Chico Art Center, as it truly is a local, very accessible, public forum for art classes, exhibits, events, and gatherings with an emphasis on community building. The Members' Show is so inclusive, covers a range of talent and mediums, and is a fun celebration of the making and viewing that art can provide."
Painter and former art teacher Ruth Hall will be entering her painting entitled 59 mph, oil on canvas, 22" x 28". Her style is expressionistic, an attempt to capture not just a place, but "a place and time." She describes her intentions behind the piece, 59 mph:
"Driving through Butte County rice fields in search of inspiration for the Snow Goose Festival, I found a corn field or what was left of one after harvest. It reminded me of the Midwest and all of the corn fields. I enjoy the view from a moving car, as a never ending movie. I try to capture that feeling."
One can see from Hall's pieces and her mark-making that being out in nature is a very important part of her process as well as her life.
Local artist and Chico State University professor, Cris Guenter attests that "The CAC Members' Exhibit is always a delightful and eclectic mix of two and three dimensional work from many talented people in Butte County. Color, culture, and character are all aspects that will be found in the exhibit."
Guenter will be submitting a small-scale intaglio print to this year's exhibition. She said she has been "&experimenting with the use of PETG plastic for the printing plate and [she is] using the soy-based Akua inks."
One can see that even from just this small sampling of artists whose pieces will be on display, there is sure to be quite an array of artwork.
A reception will be held 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12. The Chico Art Center is located at 450 Orange St., Suite 6 in what was originally Chico's first railroad depot. The center is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. everyday. For information about upcoming exhibitions, visit www.chicoartcenter.com or call 895-8726.
